Direct address

Speaking straight to the reader or listener, often using you.

What it means

Direct address is when a writer or speaker speaks straight to the reader or listener, usually using the word you or giving a command. It closes the distance between writer and audience. The reader feels personally spoken to and involved, as if the message is meant for them alone.

Direct address is common in speeches, advertisements, persuasive writing and advice texts. It draws the audience in and encourages them to respond. By addressing the reader directly, a writer can make an appeal feel personal, urgent and difficult to ignore.

Why it matters in the exam

In the reading paper, identify direct address and explain how it involves the reader. This supports points about persuasion and the relationship a writer builds with the audience. In your own persuasive writing and speeches, addressing the reader directly creates engagement and urgency, which examiners reward.

Recognising direct address also helps you see how advertisements and campaigns make a general message feel personal. This is central to how they persuade.

Example

A charity appeal that says You can change a child's future today speaks straight to the reader. It makes the responsibility feel personal and immediate.

How to use it

In analysis, explain how direct address draws the reader in, creates a personal connection or presses them to act. Do not just note the word you. In your own persuasive writing and speeches, address the reader directly to build engagement and urgency.

Combine it with other devices, such as rhetorical questions, so the reader feels personally involved in the argument you are making.
