Lessons fit your family's week, and we advise on board and strand for Cambridge, Pearson Edexcel or OxfordAQA.
Teaching English at home, with an experienced teacher alongside you
Home education gives you freedom over pace and content. It also puts the whole plan in your hands: which qualification, which board, which strand, and how to enter the exam.
English is the subject many parents feel least sure about at exam standard. Marking your own child’s writing fairly is hard when you are also the parent. An outside teacher can read that writing without any family history attached.
We teach home-educated students across Malaysia. Some have never been in a mainstream classroom.
Others left school partway through. Since no school organises the English side, we help you with the strand, the board, the weekly work and the route to the exam.
Choosing a board and a strand
Most families start with the same question: which English, and which board?
- First Language English suits a student who reads and writes English comfortably and aims for strong grades.
- English as a Second Language (ESL) suits a student still building fluency. It rewards clear, accurate communication.
- Literature in English is a separate qualification about reading set texts closely. Many students take it alongside a language strand.
Malaysian candidates commonly sit Cambridge International, Pearson Edexcel or OxfordAQA. The boards differ in the shape and wording of papers, not in difficulty. In the first lesson, the teacher reads a sample of your child’s real writing and tells you which strand suits their strengths.
Paper structures vary by board and syllabus year. We teach from each board’s current official syllabus, and you can find the details on our qualification pages.
What we teach
Nothing competes with a crowded school timetable, so the teaching can go deep. For First Language and ESL students, we build reading and writing together.
- First Language: close reading, writer’s effects (how word choice and imagery shape meaning), summary, directed writing and composition.
- ESL: clear organisation, accurate grammar and the set writing forms.
- Literature: the syllabus texts, close reading, precise quotation and building an argument.
Your child writes regularly. The teacher reads the work and gives specific notes on what earned marks and the one change that would help most.
Home-educated students sometimes need a little more support in places a classroom would fill. These include planning before writing, vocabulary for different registers (levels of formality) and writing to time. We build these in gently.
The route to the exam room
For most home-educating families, the worry is not the English. It is the practical route to the exam.
No school enters your child, so they usually sit as a private candidate through an authorised exam centre. In Malaysia, the British Council administers many of these exams.
Speaking and listening components generally need attendance at a centre. Fees and dates depend on the centre and exam series, so please confirm them with the centre.
Our sources page and our private candidates page point you to the official guidance. Registration stays with your family, in your child’s name. Our job is to make sure your child is ready for what they sit.
Reading a guide like this helps. A trial lesson shows how it works for your child, one-to-one and online.
How lessons and timetabling work
A lesson is one live hour, one-to-one and online. The teacher works through a text or task with your child.
Your child then writes a focused piece, and the teacher goes through it with specific notes. You do not need to sit in.
Home education makes timetabling easy. We can run lessons in the morning or mid-afternoon, lighten the load during a family trip and step up before an exam series. If your plan changes, such as sitting a year earlier or moving house, we adjust the rhythm instead of forcing a fixed slot.
Fitting English into your wider plan
English shares the week with maths, sciences and the projects that drew you to home education. We keep the task between lessons to one clear piece, not a pile of exercises. English earns its slot without taking over the week.
If your child works towards several IGCSEs with different providers, a steady English hour becomes a fixed point for the rest of the timetable. The teacher can tell you what was covered, so you can reinforce it at home.
How one-to-one compares
One-to-one tuition is not always the answer. A parent who writes confidently can teach much of the course with past papers and mark schemes, and bring in a teacher just to mark.
A co-op or small online class costs less per hour and adds company, but the teacher’s attention is shared. Recorded courses are cheaper still, but nobody reads your child’s writing.
One-to-one costs more per hour. It earns that cost when your child’s writing needs close reading and improvement. In exam English, that is usually where the grade is won.
Cost and what happens next
Lessons start from RM70/hr. The exact rate depends on the teacher and level, and we confirm it on WhatsApp before you commit.
There are no packages. You pay for the lessons you take.
We teach the skills behind coursework and speaking. Your child writes and submits every coursework piece and gives every spoken answer themselves, because both must be their own work.
We teach IGCSE and International GCSE English only. If your plan points to SPM, IB, UEC or STPM, we will say so and suggest the right route.
- Message us on WhatsApp with your child’s year group, any strand and board you have chosen (or “not sure yet”) and when you hope they will sit.
- We reply the same day and suggest a teacher.
- Your child has a paid, one-hour trial with the teacher who would continue. It also lets the teacher read your child’s writing and advise on strand and board.
- Regular lessons follow if it suits you.
