Audience

The intended reader or listener a piece of writing is aimed at.

What it means

Audience means the particular reader or group of readers a piece of writing is aimed at, such as a headteacher, a group of parents, a newspaper's readers or a close friend. A writer adjusts vocabulary, tone, formality and content to suit the audience. What convinces or interests one group may not suit another.

Identifying and addressing the audience is central to effective communication. The same information can be written formally for officials or warmly for children. Awareness of audience shapes almost every choice a writer makes about how to say something.

Why it matters in the exam

In directed and transactional writing tasks, matching your writing to a specified audience is assessed directly. Misjudging it, by being too casual or too formal, costs marks. In the reading paper, considering who a text is aimed at helps you explain a writer's choices of tone and vocabulary.

Awareness of audience underpins register, purpose and form. It is one of the most important ideas in the writing papers.

Example

A safety notice for young children uses short words and a friendly tone. The same warning for engineers would use precise, technical language instead.

How to use it

Before writing, identify exactly who your audience is. Adjust vocabulary, tone and formality to suit them, and keep that choice consistent throughout. In analysis, explain how a writer's language reveals their intended audience and shapes the effect.

Ask what the audience knows, expects and cares about. Let that guide every decision about how to phrase and structure your response.
