What the examiners reward in 0510/01
Reading
- R2. demonstrate understanding of the connections between the ideas, opinions and attitudes
This is one of the objectives. The 0510 overview lists the full set.
Writing
- W2. organise ideas into coherent text using a range of linking devices
This is one of the objectives. The 0510 overview lists the full set.
Marks in this component reward reading skills. These include understanding gist and detail, distinguishing main ideas from examples, and following how ideas connect across a text. They also reward writing skills.
These mean producing clear, relevant, well-organised responses in the right register for the purpose and audience. Grammar, vocabulary and punctuation must be accurate. Good work answers exactly what is asked and stays inside the set word limits.
It uses the candidate's own words where the task expects it. Our teachers show your child how to read a question stem carefully and select only relevant material. They also teach quick planning and a final accuracy check.
We build these skills through original practice rather than memorised answers.

How the routes work in 0510
All candidates take the same three components. There are no tiers or route options. Paper 1 (Reading and Writing, 70% of the written-paper weighting) and Paper 2 (Listening, 30%) together decide the A*–G grade.
Paper 3 (Speaking, 40 marks) must also be taken but is a separate endorsement graded 1 (high) to 5 (low). It is conducted and marked by the centre, moderated by Cambridge, and does not count towards the written-paper grade.

Where marks are lost on 0510/01
Building vocabulary by register: The wrong-register word. A formal, ornate word in casual writing, or slang in a formal piece, sounds wrong however impressive the word is. Read the full guide.
Approaching an ESL form or note task: A missed requirement. The writer covers two of the three things asked and forgets the third. Read the full guide.
