Practise structuring a clear, arguable literature essay. Attempt each before revealing; all lines and characters here are our own invention.

1For the task 'How does the writer present fear in our original story?', write a thesis statement and a plan of three paragraph points.

Show plan, model opening & checklist

Plan: Turn the question into an arguable thesis, then list three distinct, ordered points that build the argument.

Model opening: Thesis: The writer presents fear as something that grows in silence rather than in danger. Plan: (1) fear introduced through small domestic details; (2) fear intensified by what is left unsaid; (3) fear resolved only once it is finally named.

Checklist:

  • Thesis is arguable, not a restatement
  • Three distinct points
  • Points build in a logical order
  • Each point answers the question

2Write a topic sentence and a linking final sentence for a paragraph arguing that a character's home reflects her state of mind (our original character, Priya).

Show plan, model opening & checklist

Plan: Open with a claim tied to the argument; close by linking to the next idea or back to the thesis.

A trial lesson can start from your child's attempt at Literature essay structure practice tasks, with feedback from an experienced teacher.

Model opening: Topic sentence: The writer uses the cluttered, curtained house to externalise Priya's reluctance to face the world. Linking sentence: This retreat indoors prepares us for the moment she finally opens a window, which is where the essay turns next.

Checklist:

  • Topic sentence makes an arguable claim
  • Clearly tied to the overall argument
  • Linking sentence connects ideas
  • Shows essay cohesion

3Given three rough notes on our original poem, order them into a logical essay structure and justify each choice in a sentence. Notes: 'imagery of caged birds'; 'the hopeful final stanza'; 'the trapped tone of the opening'.

Show plan, model opening & checklist

Plan: Sequence from opening tone to central imagery to final shift, so the argument develops rather than jumps about.

Model opening: 1. The trapped tone of the opening: it establishes the mood the poem begins in. 2.

The imagery of caged birds: it develops that entrapment as the central technique. 3. The hopeful final stanza: it shows the shift, giving the essay a clear arc.

Checklist:

  • Logical, developing sequence
  • Each choice briefly justified
  • Order serves an argument
  • Shows awareness of essay shape
