The exam-style question

This is a literature essay structure question, in the style of the Literature in English papers. Read it as you would in the exam, then compare your plan with the model.

Read our original poem below. Then study how a clear literature essay is structured in response to 'How does the poet present memory?' Notice the thesis, topic sentences and links. This is our own teaching poem.

Our original poemapprox. 115 words

The Photograph

You keep it in a book you never read, our one summer pressed flat between the pages, two squinting strangers on a borrowed beach, younger than we believe we ever were. I cannot hear the sea in it. I cannot smell the salt, or say what made us laugh so hard the picture caught us blurred with it.

The day is gone. Only its edges stay: the colour of your dress, the broken rail, the way the light fell shortly before rain. Memory keeps the frame and loses the fire, and still I turn the page, and there we are.

Our annotated model response

Model response: Literature essay structure

A well-structured literature essay opens with a clear thesis. Each paragraph has a topic sentence that advances it, and the essay links back throughout. This model shows that skeleton.

Thesis: The poet presents memory as an unreliable keeper that preserves surfaces while losing the living feeling, a loss the speaker accepts yet cannot stop returning to.1 First topic sentence: The poem establishes memory's fragility through the photograph itself, 'pressed flat between the pages' of 'a book you never read': memory stored but neglected.2 Second, linked: If the image survives, the sensations do not ('I cannot hear the sea in it'), and this shift from sight to lost sound develops the thesis of partial memory.3 Third: The poem crystallises its idea in 'Memory keeps the frame and loses the fire', a metaphor that gathers the whole argument into a single line.4 Conclusion: The closing 'still I turn the page' returns us to the thesis, arguing that we treasure memory not despite its incompleteness but because of it.5

Common errors we see

  • No thesis, so the essay has nothing to argue
  • Paragraphs without topic sentences that drift off the point
  • No links between paragraphs, so points do not build
  • A conclusion that repeats, or is vague ('it is important')
  • Observations listed rather than organised into an argument

How this maps to the mark scheme

Examiners mark against assessment objectives. These are the skills the paper rewards.

For literature essay structure, the objectives in play are listed below. The wording is summarised for Cambridge IGCSE Literature in English (0475) on our qualification page.

  • Show detailed knowledge of the content of literary texts across the three forms (drama, poetry and prose), supporting points with reference to the text.
  • Communicate an informed, sensitive personal response to literary texts.

A clear line of argument lets knowledge of the text and a personal response show together. The structure is how examiners find both.

Other boards word their objectives differently, but the same skills earn the marks. Your board's official syllabus gives the exact weighting.
