What the examiners reward in Paper 1
Reading
- R3. analyse, evaluate and develop facts, ideas and opinions, using appropriate support from the text
This is one of the objectives. The 0500 overview lists the full set.
The reading objectives for 0500 reward five linked skills. Students must show they understand what a text says outright and draw out the meanings and attitudes it only implies. They analyse how a writer's language and structure create effects, and follow the writer's ideas and craft across a whole text.
They also select and organise relevant material for a set purpose. Good work is precise and anchored in the text. Strong readers point to the exact words that carry an idea.
They distinguish a fact from an inference and never pad an answer with retelling. In the higher-tariff tasks they gather points from different parts of a text rather than working line by line. They also keep their own voice concise.

A timing plan for Paper 1
The syllabus gives 80 marks and 2 hours for Paper 1. That is about 1.5 minutes per mark. A 10-mark answer therefore earns about 15 minutes.
At the halfway point of 60 minutes, check that you have covered about 40 marks' worth of the paper. This is a practice guide built from the stated totals. The paper's own instructions come first.
Where marks are lost on Paper 1
Reading for implicit meaning: Under-reading. The student stays literal and describes what happens without saying what it implies. Read the full guide.
Analysing word choice: The first trap is describing the word instead of analysing it. Saying "loomed" is a "good describing word" tells the marker nothing about its effect. Read the full guide.
