To lift it, we help students move from explaining what happens to analysing how the writer creates meaning. We also help them keep every paragraph focused on the question. The knowledge is there; we sharpen how it is used.
What a Grade B means in 0475
Cambridge International 0475 is graded on the A*–G scale. B is an upper-middle grade on the A*–G scale; good, solid work sitting below the A grades. In 0475 it reflects a reader who understands the texts well and responds relevantly.
This reader offers some real analysis of the writer's language and structure and supports points by reference to the text. What holds it back from an A is that the analysis is not yet consistent or deep. Answers can lean toward explanation rather than sustained comment on effect.
A note on grade boundaries. The mark needed for each grade is a threshold. The board sets it afresh for every exam series, so it is never fixed and we never predict it.
For past thresholds, check the official tables on the board's website. You can also use our grade-threshold lookup for past Cambridge series.
What a Grade B student shows
Below is our teaching team's view of typical work at this grade. It is not an official descriptor.
In our experience, a student at this level has a sound grasp of the set texts. They write a clear, organised response that stays relevant to the question. They support ideas with quotations or close reference.
They can comment on the writer's language and structure: noticing an image, a contrast or a turning point. Where the work sits below the A grades is depth and consistency. Analysis often explains meaning or identifies a technique without fully developing its effect on the reader.
Paragraphs can drift toward retelling the text. Personal response is present but not always confident. On the unseen paper they understand the text but analyse it unevenly, and expression is generally clear and mostly accurate.

A 12-week plan toward Grade B
Our teachers adapt this outline to each student after seeing a sample of their writing:
- Weeks 1-2: Diagnostic on an essay. Identify where paragraphs retell the story. Introduce a simple point-evidence-analysis structure that ends every point on the writer's effect.
- Weeks 3-4: From explaining to analysing. Practise the move from 'what happens' to 'how the writer shapes it' in short poetry and prose extracts.
- Weeks 5-6: Using quotation as evidence; choosing brief, relevant references and commenting on specific words rather than quoting whole sentences.
- Weeks 7-8: Answering the question; turning a question into a quick plan with a clear line. The essay argues a case rather than summarising the text.
- Weeks 9-10: Building a personal response and handling drama; commenting on character, theme and dramatic method with more confidence.
- Weeks 11-12: Unseen approach and timed practice. Use a clear method for an unfamiliar text, and write full answers to time across the chosen papers.
How we help
Your child works one-to-one with an experienced English teacher. The teacher marks your child's own writing against the criteria and targets the skills that separate them from a Grade B. Lessons are online, from RM70/hr. See Literature in English tuition.
