It analyses precisely how the writer's language, structure and form create meaning. Every point is anchored in well-chosen, integrated quotation, and the same assurance holds across poetry, prose, drama and the unseen. We build that precision and independence one text at a time.
What a Grade A* means in 0475
Cambridge International 0475 is graded on the A*–G scale, and A* is the top grade on it. A* is the highest grade the qualification awards, given for the most assured and sophisticated work. In 0475 it signals a reader who moves beyond understanding a text to interpreting it.
This reader shapes an argument, weighs alternative readings and writes about how meaning is made, not only what happens. It marks consistent perception and control across every set text and the unseen, not flashes of insight in a single answer.
A note on grade boundaries. The mark needed for each grade is a threshold. The board sets it afresh for every exam series, so it is never fixed and we never predict it.
For past thresholds, check the official tables on the board's website. You can also use our grade-threshold lookup for past Cambridge series.
What a Grade A* student shows
Below is our teaching team's view of typical work at this grade. It is not an official descriptor.
In our experience, a student working at this level reads closely and independently. They notice the small choices (a shift in verb, a line break, a stage direction). They explain the effect each has on the reader or audience.
Their essays open with a genuine argument and sustain it. They select brief, apt quotations and weave them into the sentence rather than dropping them in. They analyse language, structure and form together, hold more than one interpretation in view, and stay tightly focused on the question.
Empathic answers convince because the voice is authentically the character's. On the unseen paper they respond to an unfamiliar poem or passage with the same control. Their expression is fluent, precise and well organised.

A 12-week plan toward Grade A*
Our teachers adapt this outline to each student after seeing a sample of their writing:
- Weeks 1-2: Diagnostic on a recent essay. Pinpoint exactly where description creeps in. Then set the habit of turning every observation into an argument about the writer's purpose and its effect on the reader.
- Weeks 3-4: Word-level precision. Analyse single lexical, structural and formal choices in poetry and prose. Build tight method-to-effect chains that name how the reader is made to respond.
- Weeks 5-6: Sophistication of argument. Use conceptualised thesis statements and track a theme across a whole text. Weigh alternative or ambiguous readings confidently within one answer.
- Weeks 7-8: Drama as performance. Analyse dramatic method (staging, dialogue, structure, dramatic irony). For empathic tasks (a coursework option in the 2027 syllabus), write a fully authentic character voice rooted in the text.
- Weeks 9-10: Independence on the unseen. Use a repeatable close-reading approach to an unfamiliar poem or prose passage, working without notes and trusting the student's own analysis.
- Weeks 11-12: Timed practice across the chosen papers. Integrate quotation seamlessly and polish precision, coverage and pace under exam conditions, so quality holds from first answer to last.
How we help
Your child works one-to-one with an experienced English teacher. The teacher marks your child's own writing against the criteria and targets the skills that separate them from a Grade A*.
