Main clause

A clause with a subject and verb that can stand alone as a sentence.

What it means

A main clause, also called an independent clause, contains a subject and a verb and expresses a complete thought. It can stand alone as a sentence. Every sentence needs at least one main clause.

A simple sentence is a single main clause; a compound sentence joins two or more main clauses. A complex sentence combines a main clause with one or more subordinate clauses that depend on it. The main clause carries the core statement of a sentence, and recognising it is essential for building varied, correctly punctuated sentences.

Why it matters in the exam

In the reading paper, identifying main and subordinate clauses helps you analyse how a writer structures and emphasises ideas. In your own writing, understanding the main clause is essential for punctuating sentences correctly. It helps you avoid errors such as fragments and comma splices.

Examiners reward accurate, varied sentence structure. That control begins with knowing which part of a sentence is the main clause that must be able to stand alone.

Example

In Because it was raining, we stayed inside, the words we stayed inside form the main clause. They make complete sense on their own.

How to use it

To find the main clause, look for the part of the sentence that could stand alone and still make sense. In analysis, explain how the main clause carries the key idea while subordinate clauses add detail. In your own writing, make sure every sentence has a complete main clause.

Use this awareness to punctuate joins between clauses correctly and avoid fragments.
