Start with what your child needs
The right tutor depends on your child, not on a ranking. Write down three things first: the board and strand, the main weakness, and how many hours a week you can commit.
If you cannot name the weakness yet, a check-up lesson is a good first step. Our guide on when to start tuition explains the signs to look for.
Six checks for every tutor
Use the same six checks for each tutor you consider.
- Board and strand experience. Cambridge, Edexcel and OxfordAQA papers differ. Ask which codes the tutor has taught.
- Years of teaching. Ask for years in a classroom or in tuition, and with which year groups.
- Marking habits. Ask how quickly writing is returned and what the feedback looks like.
- Lesson shape. A good hour has a review, one taught skill and a task.
- Communication. Parents should get a short, specific update, not a generic report.
- Honesty. A good tutor tells you when your child may not need lessons.
The Education Endowment Foundation reports average gains from one-to-one tuition and from good feedback. Results vary, and no tutor can promise a grade.
The trial lesson scorecard
A trial lesson is your best evidence, because it tests the teacher as well as the child. Afterwards, score each line from 1 to 5.
| After the trial, ask | Score |
|---|---|
| Did the teacher start from my child’s real work? | |
| Did they explain one skill clearly? | |
| Did my child do most of the thinking? | |
| Did the lesson end with a specific task? | |
| Did my child leave feeling capable? | |
| Was the teacher honest about the gap and the time needed? |
A total under 20 out of 30 suggests trying another teacher. A total over 24 is a strong sign.
Online or home tuition
Both can work. Online lessons save travel time in traffic and let you choose from teachers anywhere in Malaysia. Reading and writing are easy to share on screen, so English suits the format.
Home tuition can suit a child who focuses better with someone in the room. It usually costs more.
One 2026 Malaysian rate card lists face-to-face IGCSE tuition at RM80 to RM85 an hour, against RM65 to RM70 online. Our own online rate is from RM70/hr.
Location matters less online
Online tuition removes the city from the decision. A student in Johor Bahru or Penang can work with a teacher based in KL.
Local knowledge still helps a little. A tutor who knows which schools use which boards can predict your child’s course and calendar. Our location pages describe the school scene in each area.
Reading a guide like this helps. A trial lesson shows how it works for your child, one-to-one and online.
Five questions for your first message
Send the same five questions to every provider and compare the answers.
- Which boards and codes have you taught, and in which years?
- Will my child have the same teacher each time?
- How is writing marked, and how fast is it returned?
- How do you update parents on progress?
- What happens if we stop after the first lesson?
Clear, specific answers are a good sign. Vague answers or a quick push on price are not.
A worked example
A parent in Subang Jaya is choosing for a Year 10 son on Cambridge First Language English. She books one paid trial with each of three providers.
Provider A reads his essay, teaches one skill and sets a task. Provider B talks for forty minutes about results and offers a package.
Provider C hands over a worksheet. Her scorecard gives A 26, B 14 and C 12.
She chose by measuring the teaching, not the marketing. The example is invented, but the method works anywhere.
Warning signs
These are guidance, not accusations. If you see several together, ask more questions.
- A promise of a specific grade.
- Pressure to pay for a long package before a trial.
- Lessons that are only worksheets, with no marking.
- No clear answer about which board they have taught.
- An offer to write coursework or an assessed piece for your child. This breaks exam board rules and harms your child.
- Vague answers about who will teach.
When another option is better
A group class or centre may suit a child who needs routine and company. School support may be enough if your child is progressing well. A motivated student may only need self-study with occasional marking.
Our page on online 1-to-1 vs a tuition centre explains these cases honestly.
How we do it
We are a team of experienced English teachers. Every teacher has years of classroom or tuition experience, and lessons are online and one-to-one.
The first lesson is a paid one-hour trial with the teacher who would continue, from RM70/hr. You see the teaching before you commit. You can read about our teachers first.
Next step
Send us your child’s year, board and main worry on WhatsApp, and we will suggest a teacher and a time. If you are still weighing boards, see our Cambridge vs Edexcel First Language comparison. When you are ready, Book a Trial Class and see the teaching for yourself.
