Paying without knowing what to expect
Families rarely know what good tuition looks like. You pay the fee, the lessons happen behind a screen, and you hope. That uncertainty is uncomfortable and unnecessary.
Good IGCSE English tuition has recognisable features and leaves visible signs. Knowing them lets you judge whether your money is working before results day.
It starts with a real diagnosis
Good tuition begins by finding out where this student stands. In the early sessions, a capable teacher sees how your child reads an unfamiliar text and structures a piece of writing. They also study the reports and marked work to find which skills are losing marks.
Only then can the teaching target the real gap. If a tutor gives your child the same material as every student, the personal attention you pay for is missing from the start.
A real diagnosis is also honest. It may show the problem is narrower than you feared, or that tuition is not yet needed.
It reads your child’s own writing closely
The most important thing an English tutor does is read your child’s actual writing and respond to it. IGCSE English is largely about writing. It improves when someone reads it closely and says what earned marks, what stalled and what one change would help most.
A tutor who only explains concepts, or works through past papers without reading your child’s answers, is missing the core job. Good tuition also sets work between lessons and reads it back. The cycle of teach, practise and review is where progress happens.
It teaches skills, not tricks
Effective tuition builds skills that transfer: close reading, analysis of effect, controlled writing and building an argument. Topic predictions, grade promises and exam tricks are hollow, and some are dishonest.
The real work is less glamorous and more useful. It makes your child a better reader and writer, which is what the exam rewards. A good tutor also teaches to the exact board your child sits and takes facts from current official syllabuses.
It keeps you informed
You should not have to guess whether tuition is working. Good tuition gives a short note on what was covered, an honest read on progress and a flag when something needs attention. This does not mean long reports.
It means you can see the work between the school’s termly snapshots. A tutor who goes silent for months is not giving you the visibility you pay for.
If this is on your mind, a paid one-hour trial with an experienced teacher is the simplest way to see how we teach.
The signs it is working
Working tuition leaves marks well before results day.
- Your child’s writing is clearer and more controlled when you compare an old piece with a recent one.
- The weaknesses in reports begin to shift.
- Your child can say what they are working on and why.
- They approach tasks with more confidence and less dread.
None of these promises a grade. Together they show the money is doing something real. If none appear after steady effort, raise it with the tutor.
The warning signs
Some red flags deserve attention.
- A tutor promises a specific grade.
- A tutor never reads your child’s own writing.
- Feedback stays unchanged over a long stretch.
- You get vague reassurance instead of specifics when you ask about progress.
- The tutor relies on predicting topics or selling shortcuts.
Trust these signals. Good tuition feels different.
What we aim to do
We teach IGCSE English online and one-to-one, from RM70/hr. Our experienced teachers check where your child stands and read their writing closely. They teach the skills the papers reward, to the exact board your child sits, and talk with you openly about how the work is going.
The first lesson is a paid, one-hour trial with the teacher who would continue. It is a real lesson that checks where your child stands and starts teaching.
Judging it for yourself
You do not need to be an English expert to judge tuition. Ask whether it began with a diagnosis and whether the teacher reads your child’s work. Ask whether the skills are real, whether you are kept informed and whether the writing is visibly improving.
If these hold, the money is working. If not, have a frank conversation or make a change.
