Coursework or exam route: which suits?

Some IGCSE English courses can be assessed partly by coursework or fully by exams. The better route is the one that brings out your child's best work.

Two ways to earn the grade

Where a course offers it, a student can earn part of the English grade through coursework, a portfolio of writing built over time. The other route is assessed entirely by exams.

Neither is simply easier. The question is which one brings out your child’s best work.

Not every course offers coursework, and arrangements vary. First confirm with the school what is available for your child.

The coursework route

Students write pieces over time, planning, drafting and refining them before they are assessed. It suits a child who organises their own work, takes feedback and improves a piece across drafts.

Coursework spreads effort across the course instead of loading it onto exam day. It demands discipline: meeting drafting deadlines and working honestly and independently.

The exam-only route

All of the assessment is in timed papers. A student prepares through the course and performs on the day, with no portfolio to manage. It suits a child who thinks and writes well under time pressure and prefers one clear finish line.

The trade-off is that everything rests on the exam window, so composure and timed technique carry real weight.

When to choose against instinct

A student who freezes in exams but writes well over drafts is usually better served by coursework, where it exists. This works only if they can also keep up honest, independent work across weeks. If they cannot manage drafts, the exam route may suit them better despite the nerves.

A strong exam performer who dislikes long drafting may gain little from coursework. How well the school runs the route also matters. A route with clear structure and honest oversight is worth more than one that only suits your child in theory.

If this question is on your mind, a paid one-hour trial with an experienced teacher is the simplest way to see how we teach.

Questions to settle it

  • Does my child work better with time to draft, or under a clear deadline?
  • Can they keep up independent work for weeks?
  • How do they perform in timed conditions?
  • Does the school run its coursework route with good structure?
  • What does the board’s current specification allow for this course?

Think about the family’s side too. Coursework needs a steady rhythm of effort across weeks. The exam route puts the demand into the run-up, when timed practice matters most.

If your child drifts without regular structure, one clear exam target may be easier to support at home. The right fit is the one you can keep up.

Our take

We teach the planning, drafting and self-editing skills, and the student writes and submits every piece. This protects the qualification, and it is the only way a student truly improves. For the exam route, we build timed technique and calm under pressure.

Whether a coursework option exists, how it is weighted and how marks combine all come from the board’s current specification. You will find these on our qualification pages.

Frequently asked questions

Will you help write the coursework?
No. We teach the skills a portfolio needs: planning, drafting and self-editing. The student writes and submits every piece, because the boards require coursework to be their own work.
Is coursework easier than sitting an exam?
Not exactly. Coursework gives time to draft and removes some exam-day pressure. It also needs steady organisation and honest independent work over weeks. The two routes suit different strengths.
Can a student change route partway through?
That depends on the school's entry arrangements and the board's rules. A late change is usually disruptive, so it is better to choose at the start. Your school can confirm what is allowed.
