We teach it one-to-one online, building the whole-text knowledge and argument the essay needs. Lessons turn a student's grasp of the story into analysis of how the writer shapes it.
What OxfordAQA 9275 assesses in prose
In OxfordAQA 9275, prose fiction is assessed on Paper 1, the prose and drama paper. Every candidate sits it, whatever their route. It is a closed-book exam.
Students write about their set novel from memory, without the text in front of them. The prose essay asks them to build an argument about how the writer presents a character, a theme or a setting. They support it with precise reference from across the novel.
Because it is closed book, secure recall of key moments and short details matters as much as analysis. Exact marks, timing and the set novel differ by specification year. We teach from the board's current syllabus.
Please see our qualification page for the sourced figures.
The skills that earn the marks
The same three assessment objectives apply, weighted toward reading and analysis. The first rewards understanding of the novel and a personal engagement with its themes, ideas and context. The second rewards analysis of the writer's craft (narrative voice, structure, description and the shaping of character), expressed with apt terminology.
The third rewards a clear personal response in accurate, coherent writing. Strong essays answer the word 'presents'. They treat the characters as the writer's construction.
They draw evidence from across the whole novel and build a case rather than retelling the plot. Our teachers train students to hold a small store of accurate detail they can recall under closed-book pressure. We also teach them to move from what happens to how and why the writer shapes it.
A teacher can turn Prose in OxfordAQA 9275 Literature in English into clear, practised skills. The trial hour shows how.
