We teach it one-to-one online, focusing on the stagecraft and conflict a play builds across its acts. Lessons train students to write about a play as something performed and watched, not just read.
What OxfordAQA 9275 assesses in drama
In OxfordAQA 9275, drama is assessed on Paper 1, the prose and drama paper taken by every candidate. It is sat closed book, so students write about their set play from memory. The drama essay asks them to analyse character, conflict and dramatic method across the whole text, not a single scene.
They must treat the play as a work written for performance. That means writing about stage directions, staging, structure and dramatic irony as well as dialogue. It also means writing about the effect on an audience watching.
Marks, timing and the set play differ by specification year and route. We teach the current requirements from the board's syllabus. Please see our qualification page for the sourced numbers.
The skills that earn the marks
The three assessment objectives are shared with the prose essay but reward a distinctly dramatic reading. The first credits understanding of the play and engagement with its themes, ideas and context. The second carries much of the analysis.
It credits the dramatic methods a playwright uses to make meaning for an audience. These are dialogue, stage directions, entrances and exits, structure and dramatic irony, described with apt terminology. The third credits a clear personal response in accurate, coherent writing.
The best answers track how conflict or character changes from the opening to the close. They choose precise evidence from across the acts and always connect a method to its effect in performance. Our teachers train students to see the stage picture, not only the words on the page.
A teacher can turn Drama in OxfordAQA 9275 Literature in English into clear, practised skills. The trial hour shows how.
