Marks reward a clear line of argument, close analysis of the writer's methods and well-embedded quotation. We teach essays that argue rather than retell, one to one online.
What Pearson Edexcel 4ET1 assesses in prose
On Pearson Edexcel 4ET1, modern prose is examined in the Poetry and Modern Prose paper. You write an essay on the set novel or prose text your school has chosen. The question typically points you at a theme, a character or a moment.
It asks how the writer presents it across the book. Credit rewards a shaped argument and close analysis of language and structure. Where the text calls for it, it also rewards an understanding of the context it was written in.
The exact question wording, the choice you are given and the marks vary by series and set text. Please confirm them with your school or the 4ET1 specification. Our qualification page carries the sourced figures.
This is an essay of argument, not a plot summary.
The skills that earn the marks
The prose essay rewards four things working together. First, you need a confident, personal grasp of the whole text. You also need a clear argument that answers the exact question rather than everything you know.
Second, you need to analyse how the writer builds meaning (narrative voice, structure, description, dialogue, symbolism). Use accurate terminology and link every method to its effect. Third, you need to support the argument with short quotations embedded inside your own sentences, chosen because they prove a point.
Fourth, where the text invites it, show how the time, place and ideas it was written among shape its meaning. Do not let biography swamp the analysis. Above all, examiners reward selection: a tight, relevant essay beats one that empties the notebook onto the page.
