We teach it online, one to one, so a student learns to read closely and compare with control. Every model here is our own writing, never a reproduced anthology poem.
What Pearson Edexcel 4ET1 assesses in poetry & anthology
On Pearson Edexcel 4ET1, poetry is examined in the Poetry and Modern Prose paper. Two demands sit here. One asks you to write about the poems in the prescribed Pearson anthology.
You usually compare two of them on how each presents a theme or feeling. The other asks you to read a poem you have never seen. You then set it beside a named anthology poem you have studied, drawing links in method and meaning.
The exact paper, its marks and whether it is open or closed book differ by series. Please confirm the current figures with your school or the 4ET1 specification. Our qualification page carries the sourced numbers.
What the poetry section really tests is close, comparative reading under pressure.
The skills that earn the marks
Marks here reward three linked skills. First, a clear, personal understanding of what a poem is about and the feeling it creates. This is supported by well-chosen detail rather than retelling.
Second, analysis of how the poet builds that meaning (word choice, imagery, form, rhythm, line breaks, structure). It uses accurate poetic terminology and always ties technique back to effect. Third, on the comparison tasks, the ability to explore genuine links and differences between two poems.
The writing moves between them rather than treating each in turn. Strong work reads as an argument about the poems. It weaves short embedded quotations into its own sentences and keeps returning to how language shapes response.
We build these habits step by step.
A teacher can turn Poetry & Anthology in Pearson Edexcel 4ET1 Literature in English into clear, practised skills. The trial hour shows how.
