What Pearson Edexcel 4ET1 assesses in drama
On Pearson Edexcel 4ET1, drama is examined in the Modern Drama and Literary Heritage paper. You write an essay on the play your school has set. The question points you at a character, relationship, theme or moment and asks how the playwright presents it.
A drama essay differs from a prose one because a play is written to be staged. Meaning is carried by dialogue, stage directions, structure, entrances and what an audience sees and knows. Marks reward a clear argument, close analysis of dramatic method and well-embedded quotation.
For some plays they also reward relevant context. The exact question format, any choice and the marks vary by series and set play. Please confirm them with your school or the 4ET1 specification.

The skills that earn the marks
The drama essay rewards the same core skills as the prose one, read through the lens of theatre. You need a clear argument that answers the precise question, grounded in the whole play. You need to analyse how the playwright makes meaning.
This happens through what characters say, but also through stage directions, structure, dramatic irony and the timing of entrances and exits. Think about the effect all this has on an audience. You need short embedded quotations, including from stage directions, each chosen to prove a point.
Where the play invites it, you show how its context shapes its meaning. Strong work treats the text as something performed. It keeps asking what an audience would see, hear and feel, and why the playwright arranged it so.
A teacher can turn Drama in Pearson Edexcel 4ET1 Literature in English into clear, practised skills. The trial hour shows how.
