We teach your child, one-to-one and online, to read an extract closely. We also teach them to argue about the whole book with evidence.
What Cambridge International 0475 assesses in prose
In Cambridge International 0475, prose is examined through set novels and short-story collections studied during the course. One task hands your child a printed extract. It asks for close analysis that also reaches out to the rest of the text.
Another asks for a whole-text essay with no passage in front of them, so evidence must be recalled and embedded. The papers and options your child sits depend on the school's chosen route. The set texts also change by year.
Please confirm the current list and structure with the school and the board's syllabus. In both task types, the reward is for reading like a critic. Notice how the writer tells the story, not just what happens.
The skills that earn the marks
Prose marks follow the same pattern as the rest of the qualification, and we teach to it. Your child needs to understand the text securely. Answers rest on what is actually there rather than a half-remembered plot.
They need to analyse method. This includes narrative voice, structure, the handling of time and dialogue. It also includes the small choices of word and image that shape how we feel about a character.
They also need a personal, argued response that stays on the question. Strong prose answers weave brief quotations into their own sentences and always explain effect. We drill selection, which means choosing the telling detail over the long retelling.
A teacher can turn Prose in Cambridge International 0475 Literature in English into clear, practised skills. The trial hour shows how.
How we teach it
Your child works one-to-one with an experienced English teacher who teaches to this board's papers. We start from your child's own work and practise under exam conditions. See Literature in English tuition for how a lesson runs.
