We teach the extract task and the whole-play essay one-to-one and online. We focus on dramatic method: dialogue, stage directions and how tension is built.
What Cambridge International 0475 assesses in drama
In Cambridge International 0475, drama is examined through set plays studied in class. Students usually write on a printed extract for close analysis and on a whole-play essay answered from memory. The exact papers and options depend on the route the school has chosen.
The key difference from prose is that a play is designed for the stage. Your child should write about audiences, performance and effect in the theatre. Characters are not real people, so they should not be treated as such.
Set plays and structure change by year. Please confirm the current texts and paper choices with the school and the board's syllabus. We build the habit of reading dialogue for what is not said as much as for what is.
The skills that earn the marks
Drama answers earn marks for the same three strengths the qualification rewards throughout, shaped for the stage. Your child should understand the play securely and place any extract within the whole action. They should analyse dramatic method: how dialogue, pace, stage directions, entrances and silences create tension and steer an audience's response.
They should also offer an informed personal view, argued and supported with brief, exact reference. Good work imagines the moment in performance and explains the effect a choice would have on those watching. We coach your child to write about subtext and staging rather than retelling scenes.
A teacher can turn Drama in Cambridge International 0475 Literature in English into clear, practised skills. The trial hour shows how.
How we teach it
Your child works one-to-one with an experienced English teacher who teaches to this board's papers. We start from your child's own work and practise under exam conditions. See Literature in English tuition for how a lesson runs.
