What Pearson Edexcel 4EA1 assesses in spoken language
Alongside the written papers, Pearson Edexcel 4EA1 includes a spoken language endorsement. Students prepare and give a presentation in Standard English on a topic of their choice, then respond to questions on it. The endorsement is assessed and reported separately from the 9-1 written grade, on its own scale.
It appears beside the grade rather than counting toward it. Assessors focus on structure, delivery, Standard-English register and the ability to answer questions thoughtfully. Schools run the assessment within their own arrangements, and the details vary.
Please ask your school, or check the 4EA1 syllabus, how and when the endorsement is conducted and reported.
The skills that earn the marks
This endorsement rewards spoken skills the written papers cannot show. Good work presents ideas clearly and in a logical order. It uses Standard English confidently (full forms, precise vocabulary, complete sentences) and adapts tone to the audience and purpose.
Delivery counts too: pace, emphasis, eye contact, and a voice that carries rather than a script read aloud. Strong candidates also listen well. They answer questions with real command of the topic, developing them rather than deflecting.
A good talk sounds prepared but not memorised. A good question round shows the speaker truly understands what they are talking about.
