We work through the 4EA1 non-fiction reading with your child at their own pace.
What Pearson Edexcel 4EA1 assesses in reading
For Pearson Edexcel 4EA1, reading is assessed mainly through the non-fiction and literary non-fiction texts on Paper 1. Students answer questions on a studied anthology text and on an unseen text. This includes comparing how two writers handle a subject.
Reading of poetry and prose is assessed on the other written paper. The questions move from locating and interpreting information toward analysing a writer's methods and viewpoint. We keep exact question counts, mark tariffs and timings general here, because the board can revise them between series.
Please check the current figures with your school and on the qualification page.
The skills that earn the marks
Marks here reward three connected skills. First, reading closely for explicit and implicit meaning and drawing evidence from more than one text. Second, analysing how writers use language and structure to shape meaning and steer a reader.
This covers word choice, imagery, sentence forms, ordering, openings and endings, named with precise terminology. Third, comparing how two writers present ideas, attitudes and perspectives. Good work quotes briefly and embeds the quotation, then explains the effect rather than labelling a device and moving on.
It stays anchored to the question's focus and tracks the writer's viewpoint across a whole text. It also keeps loose personal opinion out of the analysis.
A teacher can turn Reading in Pearson Edexcel 4EA1 First Language English into clear, practised skills. The trial hour shows how.
How we teach it
Your child works one-to-one with an experienced English teacher who teaches to this board's papers. We start from your child's own work and practise under exam conditions. See First Language English tuition for how a lesson runs.
