Our team of experienced English teachers teaches both online, one to one. We use original models and detailed feedback on your child's drafts. We build content, structure and accuracy together, not as separate lessons.
What Cambridge International 0500 assesses in writing
In Cambridge International 0500, writing is assessed on the paper that pairs directed writing with composition. In the first part, students read short texts. They then write for a stated form, audience and purpose (a letter, speech, article or report).
They must use and evaluate the ideas they have read. In the second part, they choose a composition and write either a descriptive or a narrative piece. The tasks reward writing that is shaped for its reader, controlled in structure and accurate in expression.
Word guidance, the choice of tasks and the split of marks between content and technical accuracy vary by syllabus version. Please confirm the current details with your school or the board's official 0500 syllabus.
The skills that earn the marks
The writing objectives for 0500 reward what a student communicates and how accurately they write it. Marks come from five areas. The first is developing ideas and expressing what is thought, felt or imagined.
The second is ordering a piece into coherent, well-linked paragraphs. The third is a range of vocabulary and sentence structures used with real purpose. The fourth is matching register to the form and reader.
The fifth is accurate spelling, punctuation and grammar. Good work reads as though the writer meant every choice. The register fits the task, paragraphs build rather than list, and sentence length varies for effect.
The accuracy is clean enough that the reader is never pulled out of the piece. In directed writing, it also shows a writer weighing the source material, not merely repeating it.
A teacher can turn Writing in Cambridge International 0500 First Language English into clear, practised skills. The trial hour shows how.
How we teach it
