It combines an individual task, in which the student presents on a chosen topic, with a discussion that follows. Our team of experienced English teachers helps your child choose a topic, shape a talk and respond confidently. Lessons are online and one to one.
What Cambridge International 0500 assesses in speaking & listening
Cambridge International 0500 includes a speaking and listening component. The school assesses it and it is moderated, so it is not sat as a written paper. It centres on an individual task, in which the student speaks on a topic they have prepared.
A discussion follows, in which a teacher asks questions and the student develops their ideas in conversation. The component rewards clear structure, engagement with a listener, and the ability to listen and respond rather than recite. How it is reported depends on the route and syllabus version.
It may count toward the overall grade or be recorded as a separate endorsement. The length of each part also varies. Please confirm the current arrangement with your school or the board's official 0500 syllabus.
The skills that earn the marks
The speaking and listening objectives reward a student who can structure and sustain a talk. They should choose language and a register that suit the topic and audience. Just as importantly, they must listen closely and respond to what is actually said.
Good work in the individual task has a clear shape. It opens by framing the topic. The middle develops a genuine line of thought with examples.
The close makes a point rather than trailing off. In the discussion, strong candidates take a question seriously and build on it. They are willing to develop or qualify a view.
We coach the thinking and the delivery. We never write or supply a script, because the component tests the student's own spoken response.
A teacher can turn Speaking & Listening in Cambridge International 0500 First Language English into clear, practised skills. The trial hour shows how.
How we teach it
Your child works one-to-one with an experienced English teacher who teaches to this board's papers. We start from your child's own work and practise under exam conditions. See First Language English tuition for how a lesson runs.
