It rewards fluency, accuracy and the ability to extend an answer, not memorised lines. We build all three in 1-to-1 practice, focusing on skills rather than scripts.

What this task asks in OxfordAQA 9280

In the speaking component, your child usually gives a short presentation on a topic. They then take part in an assessed conversation that develops from it. The assessment looks at how effectively your child communicates and interacts.

This means speaking clearly, responding to what is asked, developing ideas with reasons and examples, and using accurate, varied language. It is conducted and recorded by the centre, and the result can be carried forward for the lifetime of the specification. Check the exact format, timing and marks on the 9280 qualification page or the current OxfordAQA syllabus.

Also check how your child's centre organises the assessment.

How we approach it, step by step

  1. Choose a presentation topic your child can say a lot about, and shape it into a clear beginning, middle and end.
  2. Prepare ideas and key vocabulary, not a word-for-word script: reading aloud sounds flat and cannot adapt to questions.
  3. Practise developing every answer: state a point, give a reason with 'because', then add 'for example' and a detail.
  4. Rehearse handling questions: listen to what is actually asked and answer that, rather than steering back to prepared lines.
  5. Learn a few phrases for keeping the conversation flowing and for asking politely for clarification when a question is unclear.
  6. Work on delivery: a steady pace, clear pronunciation, and pausing to think instead of filling silence with 'um'.
  7. Record practice runs and review them for tense, agreement and vocabulary range, so accuracy improves alongside fluency.
Our annotated model response

An original model: speaking (ESL)

Below is a short original model of a spoken answer we use in teaching. It is shown as a transcript with notes on the techniques that lift a speaking mark. The words and topic are ours.

Examiner (our example): Do you think students spend too much time on their phones?1I think they do, yes, 2mainly because it's so easy to lose track of time on social media.3For example, I only planned to check messages last night, but an hour disappeared before I noticed.4That said, phones aren't all bad;5we use them for research and for staying in touch with family overseas.6So I'd say the problem is really about self-control rather than the phone itself.7Sorry, could you repeat the next question?8

The passage and model above are our own original teaching material, written to show the technique. None of it is a reproduced exam text or mark scheme.

Where students lose marks

  • Answering in one or two words and waiting for the next question, instead of developing each point with a reason and an example.
  • Reciting a memorised script, which sounds unnatural and falls apart as soon as an unexpected question is asked.
  • Not listening to the question, so the answer drifts back to prepared material that does not fit what was asked.
  • Speaking too fast or too quietly out of nerves, which makes clear communication harder to hear.
  • Filling every pause with 'um' or 'like' instead of pausing briefly to think.

Frequently asked questions

Will you write a script for my child's speaking assessment?
No. We prepare skills and confidence, not scripts: memorised answers sound flat and collapse when the conversation takes an unexpected turn. Instead we practise developing ideas, handling questions and keeping the talk flowing. Your child can speak naturally on the day. Check the current 9280 syllabus for how the assessment is run.
How is the speaking assessment different from the other papers?
It is a non-exam assessment conducted and recorded by your child's centre, not a written exam. Its result can be carried forward for the lifetime of the specification. The focus is spoken interaction, meaning presenting a topic and holding a conversation. It is not reading or writing on paper under timed conditions.
My child is shy; can speaking still be improved?
Yes. Fluency and confidence grow with regular, low-pressure practice, which is exactly what 1-to-1 lessons give. We start with familiar topics and build the habit of extending answers. We also rehearse handling questions calmly, so your child speaks more steadily. Confidence usually rises as the technique becomes automatic over the weeks.
