What OxfordAQA 9280 assesses in listening

OxfordAQA 9280 assesses listening through a written examination based on recorded material. This is typically a mix of monologues and dialogues, such as announcements, conversations and short talks. Your child hears each recording and answers questions.

These range from selecting a correct option to writing a short response in their own words. The paper tests comprehension of spoken English: catching specific details, following the gist, and understanding a speaker's purpose or opinion. Recordings are normally played more than once, so a clear listening-and-checking routine matters.

For the exact number of recordings, plays, question types, timing and marks, please check the 9280 qualification page. You can also check the current OxfordAQA syllabus.

The skills that earn the marks

The listening paper rewards a candidate who listens with a purpose. Before a recording plays, good candidates read the question so they know what to listen for. While it plays, they hold the gist and catch the specific detail the question asks about.

They also recognise when a speaker signals an opinion, a change of mind or a reason. For objective questions, where an option is chosen, strong work rules out near-misses that sound right but answer a different question. For productive questions, where a short answer is written, good work is exact and spelled clearly enough to be understood.

We teach your child to predict before listening and to use the first and second playings for different jobs. We also teach them to write answers that are brief and correct.
