It is the largest written part of the course, and careful method makes the biggest difference here. We teach it in private, one-to-one online lessons built around your child's own weak points.
What Pearson Edexcel 4ES1 assesses in reading & writing
On the Edexcel 4ES1 route, reading and writing are assessed together on one written paper. Your child reads a range of real-world texts, such as articles, reports, letters and advertisements. They answer questions on how well they understand and select information, then complete writing tasks in a given form.
The reading questions move from locating stated details to grasping implied meaning. They also cover how a writer builds an argument, and a text's purpose and the writer's attitude. The writing tasks ask for a response shaped to a stated purpose, audience and register.
We follow how the current specification describes the paper. Please confirm exact marks, timing and question numbers with your school or the board's syllabus.
The skills that earn the marks
The reading marks reward students who read the question precisely and locate the right part of the text. They answer in exact, relevant words rather than copying a whole sentence. Understanding is tested at two levels: what a text states outright, and what it implies through tone and word choice.
Our teaching trains both close reading and inference. The writing marks reward clear communication that fits the set purpose, audience and register. They also reward sensible organisation, accuracy in grammar, spelling and punctuation, and a range of vocabulary and sentence types.
Good work here is not the longest answer. It is the answer that does exactly what the task asks, in language that is controlled and appropriate. We teach your child to plan for that and to self-check before moving on.
A teacher can turn Reading & Writing in Pearson Edexcel 4ES1 English as a Second Language into clear, practised skills. The trial hour shows how.
How we teach it
Your child works one-to-one with an experienced English teacher who teaches to this board's papers. We start from your child's own work and practise under exam conditions. See English as a Second Language tuition for how a lesson runs.
