It rewards attention and technique as much as vocabulary. We coach it one-to-one online, using your child's own listening to find and fix the habit that costs marks.

What Pearson Edexcel 4ES1 assesses in listening

On the Edexcel 4ES1 route, listening is assessed on its own written paper. Your child hears recorded material, for example a talk, an interview, an announcement or a conversation, and answers questions on it. These include objective questions such as multiple-response items, and short-answer questions that call for a specific detail.

There is time to read the questions before listening and to complete answers between hearings. The task is not a test of transcription. It rewards students who listen for particular information, hold it while they write, and record it accurately.

We describe the paper as the current specification does. Please confirm the exact number of hearings, question types and marks with your school or the board's syllabus.

The skills that earn the marks

Listening marks reward understanding of spoken English at two levels. The first is the explicit information a speaker gives (names, places, times, reasons, numbers). The second is the implied meaning carried by tone, emphasis and how something is said.

Strong answers catch the specific point the question targets, not a neighbouring detail. They are written clearly and spelled correctly, because a heard answer still has to be recorded well to score. Good work shows a student who used the reading time to predict what to listen for.

They noted efficiently without over-writing, and stayed calm through a missed point rather than freezing. We teach the prediction, note-taking and recovery habits that turn attention into marks. We also build the listening stamina that longer recordings demand.

A teacher can turn Listening in Pearson Edexcel 4ES1 English as a Second Language into clear, practised skills. The trial hour shows how.
