It is most often taken by students retaking the qualification, private candidates and those on a later-finishing course. This guide sets out how the November series is organised and how our teachers compress preparation into a shorter run-up. It refers to no specific past paper and makes no prediction about any paper's content.

How the November series works

As in every 4EA1 series, candidates sit the compulsory Component 1. They sit it alongside either the examined Component 2 or the coursework Component 3. The Spoken Language Endorsement is reported separately where it is offered.

4EA1 is a linear qualification, so the components are taken at the end of the course of study. The papers carry the same marks and weightings as in any other sitting: 60% for Component 1 and 40% for the second component. Component 1 lasts 2 hours 15 minutes and Component 2 lasts 1 hour 30 minutes.

Results follow some weeks after the papers. Confirm the timetable with your school or exam centre.

Who sits the November series

Fewer students sit the November series, and they tend to fall into a few groups. One group is candidates retaking the qualification to lift a grade from an earlier sitting. Another is students who covered the 4EA1 syllabus on a later timeline and are ready to certificate at the end of the year.

A third is private candidates in Malaysia, such as homeschoolers or transfers, entering through an exam centre outside the usual school calendar. For all of them the run-up is short. The plan has to be targeted rather than a leisurely year of coverage.

The trial lesson can set a revision plan for the November Pearson Edexcel 4EA1 exam series, based on your child's own work.

A preparation timeline for the November series

Our teachers usually pace preparation for the November exams like this. We adapt it to when your child starts and where they are:

  • As soon as entry is decided (about 3-4 months out): Pin down exactly what is being sat: a first sitting or a retake, and the Component 2 or Component 3 route. Then run a diagnostic against the assessment objectives to find where marks are being lost.
  • 2-3 months out: For retake candidates, drill the component and assessment objective that held the earlier grade back. For first-time November candidates, secure Component 1 reading and transactional writing first.
  • 4-6 weeks out: Timed practice on the exact papers being sat: Component 1 at 2h15m and, where relevant, Component 2 at 1h30m. Sharpen imaginative or transactional writing for AO4 and AO5.
  • 2-3 weeks out: A full mock under exam conditions, followed by focused correction of the highest-cost errors. Lock timing and a sensible question order for each paper being sat.
  • Final week: Brief, steadying review and a clear exam-day plan. Nothing new is added. The aim is to walk in rehearsed and calm.

We never predict what a paper will contain, and this page describes no past paper. Confirm the exact timetable and any assessment changes for your exam year with your school or the board. Past papers are on the board's own website.

Frequently asked questions

Can my child retake just one 4EA1 component in November?
Entry and retake rules are set by the board and administered through your exam centre, so confirm the detail there. 4EA1 is a linear qualification, with its components taken at the end of the course of study. Whatever the entry, our teachers focus lessons tightly on the paper and the assessment objective that cost the most marks.
Is a November grade worth the same as a June grade?
Both series lead to the same 4EA1 qualification, graded on the 9-1 scale. Grade boundaries are set for each series after marking. The main difference is timing. November lets a student confirm or improve a result in the second half of the year rather than waiting for the summer sitting.
Is a few months enough to prepare for the November series?
It can be, if the plan is focused. For a retake, we work on the component and skill that held the grade back rather than re-covering everything. For a first sitting on a short timeline, we prioritise Component 1, which carries 60%. We build the second component alongside it. Regular timed writing keeps progress visible.
