First Language English is the natural step for the fluent KK student who reads widely and wants challenge rather than support, a common profile in Kota Kinabalu's international schools. It asks for analytical reading and crafted writing well beyond everyday competence.
Our team of experienced English teachers teaches it as its own subject, not an intensified version of general English. We train a Kota Kinabalu student to read a passage for the writer's deliberate choices and their effect, and to write descriptive, narrative and directed pieces with the same awareness, so their reading sharpens their writing, and both rest on technique that can be taught and repeated rather than left to instinct.
What we cover
We teach First Language English across its three demands. Reading lessons develop analysis of language and structure: a KK student learns to identify a writer's methods and to state their effect exactly, not in generalities. Directed writing lessons practise transforming source material into a new text for a particular audience and purpose while holding the content firm.
Composition lessons build descriptive and narrative writing, with attention to opening lines, paragraph shaping and endings that close cleanly. Our team of experienced English teachers marks analytical and creative work in the same lesson so the two reinforce each other, and ties every task to your board's own syllabus rather than to any remembered rubric of ours.
Lessons are online, one-to-one and timetabled around school. The first step is a paid one-hour trial.
Local to Kota Kinabalu, taught online
Kota Kinabalu is in Sabah. A student's exact address makes no difference online, with the same experienced teacher and the same one-to-one hour. For local schools and travel, see our Kota Kinabalu page or the Sabah page.
The shape of a lesson
The routine is simple: one teacher, one student, one hour, timetabled around school. Lessons are from RM70/hr, with the exact figure agreed before booking, and the first step is a one-hour paid trial.
