Writing uses an appropriate form, communicates clearly and is mostly accurate. Our teachers focus on securing these fundamentals and making them consistent.
We do this through steady one-to-one work on reading, transactional writing and timing. Book a one-hour paid trial from RM70/hr on WhatsApp.
What a Grade 4 means in 4EA1
Pearson Edexcel 4EA1 is graded on the 9–1 scale. Grade 4 sits in the middle of the Pearson Edexcel 9-1 scale for 4EA1. It is above the lower grades and just below Grade 5.
It recognises a candidate who understands texts at a straightforward level and communicates clearly in writing. Because Pearson re-sets grade boundaries from each series' papers and marking, the mark it takes changes every time. We never quote one.
We secure the core reading, writing and accuracy fundamentals that place a candidate reliably in this band.
A note on grade boundaries. The mark needed for each grade is a threshold. The board sets it afresh for every exam series, so it is never fixed and we never predict it. For past thresholds, check the official tables on the board's website.
What a Grade 4 student shows
Below is our teaching team's view of typical work at this grade. It is not an official descriptor.
In our teachers' view, a Grade 4 student reads unseen and anthology non-fiction and understands the main, explicit meaning. They pick out relevant points and grasp some straightforward implicit ideas. Their analysis usually identifies a writer's method or technique and supports it with a quotation. But the explanation of the effect tends to be brief or general rather than developed.
On the comparison task they can point to obvious similarities or differences between two texts. Transactional and imaginative writing communicates clearly and uses a broadly appropriate form and structure. Tone and register may slip, and paragraphing can be uneven.
Spelling, punctuation and grammar are mostly accurate on familiar words and structures. Errors are more frequent when the writing becomes ambitious, but meaning generally stays clear.

A 12-week plan toward Grade 4
Our teachers adapt this outline to each student after seeing a sample of their writing:
- Weeks 1-2: Diagnostic, then reading the question correctly. Identify exactly what is asked, retrieve the right explicit points from unseen non-fiction, and answer to the number of marks available.
- Weeks 3-4: A simple, repeatable analysis frame (point, quotation, effect). Every answer names a writer's method and says something clear about its effect on the reader (AO2).
- Weeks 5-6: Transactional writing basics (AO4). Plan three or four clear paragraphs and choose the right form (letter, article, speech). Open and close in a way that suits the task and audience.
- Weeks 7-8: Accuracy fundamentals (AO5). Cover full stops and capitals, sentence boundaries, common spellings and tense consistency. Add short proofreading practice to catch the slips that lose easy marks.
- Weeks 9-10: Building consistency across the paper. Manage time so both reading and writing sections are fully attempted. Add a gentle introduction to the anthology and imaginative writing for Component 2/3.
- Weeks 11-12: Familiar, timed practice at a steady pace, revisiting the frames until they are automatic. Add a simple end-of-paper checklist so no straightforward marks are left behind.
How we help
Your child works one-to-one with an experienced English teacher. The teacher marks your child's own writing against the criteria and targets the skills that separate them from a Grade 4.
