Our teachers secure the fundamentals (tenses, agreement, articles) and build reliable comprehension and structured writing. You reach it by handling the main tasks steadily and keeping errors from blocking meaning.
What a Grade C means in 0510
Cambridge International 0510 is graded on the A*–G scale. On the A*–G scale, C is a middle grade. Cambridge states that grade C overall with grade 2 in Speaking in 0510 can be considered equivalent to CEFR B2.
It marks a competent everyday user of the language who is understood clearly throughout. This user handles the main reading, writing and listening tasks and controls the core grammar, even though errors are still fairly frequent. The step up to B is about steadier accuracy and fuller answers rather than learning the language afresh.
A note on grade boundaries. The mark needed for each grade is a threshold. The board sets it afresh for every exam series, so it is never fixed and we never predict it.
For past thresholds, check the official tables on the board's website. You can also use our grade-threshold lookup for past Cambridge series.
What a Grade C student shows
Below is our teaching team's view of typical work at this grade. It is not an official descriptor.
Our teachers see a C candidate communicate clearly: they are understood throughout, even where the English is not always accurate. In reading they answer explicit detail questions reliably and manage some straightforward inference. The harder inference questions are less secure.
Short answers and notes pick out several main details, but some answers are over-copied or incomplete. Both writing tasks address the purpose and get the basic format right, with register that is broadly appropriate, even if ideas are simple. The core grammar (common tenses, subject–verb agreement, plurals and articles) is mostly controlled. But errors are still frequent enough to notice.
The foundations are in place; the next step is accuracy and completeness.
To reach a Grade C in 0510 English as a Second Language, a student needs to know what the next band asks for. The trial hour finds out.
A 12-week plan toward Grade C
Our teachers adapt this outline to each student after seeing a sample of their writing:
- Weeks 1-2: Mark a past paper together to see which exercises are secure and which are losing the most marks. Then set a short list of achievable fundamentals to fix first.
- Weeks 3-4: Core grammar: focused practice on the errors that appear most (tenses, subject–verb agreement, articles and plurals). Use sentences drawn from the student's own writing.
- Weeks 5-6: Reading for explicit meaning: reliable short-answer and detail questions, plus a clear method for the notes exercise that finds the main details.
- Weeks 7-8: Matching and multiple choice: finding the relevant detail in a longer text, reading all the options and ruling out the distractors.
- Weeks 9-10: Writing basics: getting the format right for the informal email and the formal article, report, essay or review, and holding a suitable register for the audience.
- Weeks 11-12: Timed practice on whole papers to make the fundamentals reliable and consistent under exam conditions.
How we help
Your child works one-to-one with an experienced English teacher. The teacher marks your child's own writing against the criteria and targets the skills that separate them from a Grade C. Lessons are online, from RM70/hr. See English as a Second Language tuition.
