We work one-to-one from a sample of your child's writing, securing the basics one at a time. We never predict a grade: thresholds change every series.
What a Grade C means in 0500
Cambridge International 0500 is graded on the A*–G scale. C sits in the middle of the A*–G scale. It is often the standard schools and colleges look for as a solid pass.
In our teachers' experience it marks a student who understands straightforward texts and writes clearly enough to be understood. Their reading and writing are not yet consistent. Analysis stays close to the surface, and accuracy and structure waver under time.
It is a secure foundation to build the higher grades on.
A note on grade boundaries. The mark needed for each grade is a threshold. The board sets it afresh for every exam series, so it is never fixed and we never predict it.
For past thresholds, check the official tables on the board's website. You can also use our grade-threshold lookup for past Cambridge series.
What a Grade C student shows
Below is our teaching team's view of typical work at this grade. It is not an official descriptor.
A C-grade student communicates clearly and understands the main ideas of a text, but works mostly at the literal level. On the reading paper they answer straightforward comprehension well. But writer's-effects answers tend to spot a technique or retell the line rather than explain its effect. Implicit meaning is often missed.
Summaries pick up some key points but frequently lift the writer's phrasing or run over the word guidance. In directed writing they attempt the form, but the register and audience can be inconsistent. Compositions have ideas and a basic shape, though paragraphing, sequencing and endings can be uneven.
Accuracy in spelling, punctuation and grammar slips noticeably under time. The foundations are in place; the priority is making comprehension, structure and accuracy dependable before adding depth.

A 12-week plan toward Grade C
Our teachers adapt this outline to each student after seeing a sample of their writing:
- Weeks 1-2: Diagnostic and foundations: mark a full timed paper and agree the two or three basics that will raise the grade fastest.
- Weeks 3-4: Reading for meaning; answering comprehension accurately and reliably, and finding implicit meaning, not just the literal words on the page.
- Weeks 5-6: Starting writer's effects; a simple, repeatable sentence pattern for explaining what a word or image does, replacing bare technique-spotting.
- Weeks 7-8: Summary basics. Identify the key points and put them in the student's own words to avoid lifting. Stay within the word guidance.
- Weeks 9-10: Writing with structure and accuracy. Plan a clear beginning, middle and end, and secure paragraphing. Add a checking routine for the student's common errors.
- Weeks 11-12: Directed writing for form and audience, then timed practice to make the fundamentals consistent and calm under real exam conditions.
How we help
Your child works one-to-one with an experienced English teacher. The teacher marks your child's own writing against the criteria and targets the skills that separate them from a Grade C. Lessons are online, from RM70/hr. See First Language English tuition.
