Sibilance

The repetition of soft s, sh and z sounds to create a hushed or hissing effect.

What it means

Sibilance is the repetition of soft, hissing consonant sounds, chiefly s, sh and z, in nearby words. It is a particular kind of alliteration focused on these breathy sounds. Depending on context, sibilance can feel gentle and soothing, like a whisper or soft breeze.

It can also feel unsettling and menacing, like a hiss or a warning. Sibilance creates an almost audible sound in the reader's mind. Writers use it to build atmosphere, slow a line and hint at secrecy, calm or threat beneath the words.

Why it matters in the exam

In Literature, noticing sibilance gives you something specific to analyse about the sound and mood of a passage, especially in poetry and atmospheric prose. The best answers explain whether the effect is calming or sinister and why. In descriptive writing, sibilance is a subtle way to build a quiet or eerie atmosphere without stating the mood.

Examiners value this.

Example

"The soft shush of the sea slipped across the sand" uses repeated s and sh sounds to create a hushed, drowsy, whispering atmosphere.

How to use it

Quote the sibilant phrase and decide whether the hissing sound feels soothing or threatening in its context. Explain how that effect supports the mood or hints at something beneath the surface. Do not simply label it as sibilance.

The marks come from linking the sound to atmosphere and to what the writer wants the reader to feel.
