Setting

Setting is the time and place in which the events of a story, poem or play unfold. It includes the period, location, season, weather and social background. Setting does far more than provide a backdrop.

It shapes mood and atmosphere, influences how characters behave, and can carry symbolic meaning. A writer's choice of where and when to set a scene affects everything from the tension to the theme. Analysing setting means seeing it as an active part of the writing, not merely as scenery behind the action.

In the reading and Literature papers, examiners reward you for showing how setting creates atmosphere, reflects character or supports theme. Do not just describe where a scene takes place. In narrative and descriptive writing, a vivid, purposeful setting grounds the reader and sets the mood.

It can also quietly reinforce the ideas you want to explore.

Imagine a tense conversation in a cramped, overheated waiting room, with rain streaking the windows. The characters' discomfort and impatience feel almost physical.

Do more than locate the scene: explain how the setting shapes mood, affects characters or reflects a theme. Pick out details of place, time and weather and link them to the feeling or ideas of the passage. In your own writing, choose a setting that supports your story's mood and use its details to do real narrative work.
