Literary term

Protagonist

The main character at the centre of a story's action and development.

What it means

The protagonist is the main character at the centre of a story. Their choices, struggles and development drive the plot forward. The reader usually follows the protagonist most closely and is invited to care what happens to them.

A protagonist need not be likeable or heroic. Their goals and obstacles shape the narrative. They often change over the course of the text as they respond to conflict.

Identifying the protagonist and tracking their journey is central to understanding how a story is built and what it means.

Why it matters in the exam

In Literature, essays frequently focus on the protagonist's development, motives and relationships. Understanding this role is essential for organising an argument about a text. Examiners reward you for tracing how the protagonist changes and what that change reveals about theme.

In your own narrative writing, give your protagonist clear goals and obstacles. This helps you shape a plot that develops, not just a list of events.

Example

A story about a shy student who gradually finds the courage to speak up in class has that student as the protagonist, whose growth the reader follows throughout.

How to use it

Identify the character the story follows most closely and whose choices drive events. Then trace how they change and what that reveals about theme. Discuss their goals, obstacles and relationships.

In your own writing, give your protagonist a clear desire and something standing in the way. Their journey gives the plot direction and meaning.
