Implication

Something a text suggests or hints at without stating it outright.

What it means

An implication is something a text suggests or hints at without stating it directly. The writer implies and the reader infers. Implication is the meaning the writer plants beneath the surface.

Inference is the reader's act of drawing it out. Implications may be created through word choice, tone, detail or what is left unsaid. They let a writer suggest ideas subtly, leaving the reader to grasp what is meant.

Recognising implication is central to careful reading. So much of what a text communicates lies in hints and undertones, not plain statement.

Why it matters in the exam

In the reading paper, questions on what a text suggests or implies test whether you can read beneath the surface. Marks depend on identifying the hinted meaning with support from the text. Examiners reward you for showing you understand not only what is said but what is meant.

In your own writing, learn to imply ideas through tone and detail instead of stating everything. This is a sign of mature, subtle expression.

Example

A sentence notes that the guest praised the meal a little too loudly. It implies, without stating it, that the guest did not really enjoy the food.

How to use it

In analysis, identify what a detail, word or silence implies. Support your reading with evidence, using phrases such as this hints that. Distinguish the writer's implication from your inference.

In your own writing, imply ideas through carefully chosen detail and tone instead of spelling everything out. This shows the examiner a controlled, subtle command of suggestion.
