Language term

Dialect

A regional or social variety of language with distinctive words and grammar.

What it means

A dialect is a variety of a language spoken by a particular region or social group. It has its own distinctive vocabulary, grammar and, sometimes, spelling when written down. Dialect differs from accent, which is only about pronunciation; dialect includes word choice and sentence patterns too.

Writers use dialect in dialogue to make characters sound authentic, show where they come from, and convey social background or identity. Representing dialect in writing brings characters and settings to life. It can carry meaning about community, belonging and difference within a text.

Why it matters in the exam

In the reading and Literature papers, recognising dialect helps you discuss how a writer creates realistic voices. It also shows a character's background, region or identity. Examiners reward you for explaining the effect of dialect rather than merely noticing it.

In your own creative writing, a light, consistent touch of dialect in dialogue can make characters vivid and distinct. Keep it clear enough for the reader to follow easily.

Example

A character who greets a friend with a regional phrase and shortened words instantly signals where they grew up. It marks them apart from a formal speaker.

How to use it

Identify the dialect features in a character's speech, such as distinctive words or grammar. Then explain what they reveal about the character's background or identity. In your own writing, use dialect sparingly and consistently in dialogue for authenticity, without overloading it.

Avoid confusing dialect, which includes vocabulary and grammar, with accent, which concerns only how words sound.
