This guide explains range in reading and writing, and why chasing it blindly backfires.

What do examiners mean by “range”?

“Range” means variety used with control. A student with good range uses different kinds of words, sentence shapes, ideas and evidence, each where it fits. Variety without control is not rewarded, because it usually harms accuracy and clarity.

So range is not an instruction to write in a fancier way. It is a quality that shows across the whole paper.

What does range look like in writing?

Vocabulary. The student picks the precise word and adjusts tone to suit the task. “The room was cold” and “the room held its breath in the cold” are both fine. The second shows range only if the image adds something.

Sentence structure. Strong writers mix long, flowing sentences with short, sharp ones. A short sentence after three long ones stands out and adds emphasis.

Ideas. In argument writing, range means genuinely different points, not the same point repeated. Considering a counter-argument shows more range than restating your opening louder.

What does range look like in reading answers?

In analysis, range means commenting on different kinds of effect. That could be an image in one place and a change in sentence length in another. Saying the same thing about every quotation shows narrow range.

In summary tasks, range means picking points from across the whole text, not just the easy ones at the start.

Why chasing range can backfire

Under pressure, students often try to force range, and it goes wrong. They swap clear words for obscure ones, or try punctuation they cannot yet control. The examiner sees ambition without control, which scores lower.

Real range is built over months until it feels natural. Three sentence types used cleanly beat six attempted and two controlled.

Advice like this is easier to act on with a teacher beside you. A paid one-hour trial starts from your child's own writing.

Is range the same as writing more?

No. A long answer can be narrow if it repeats the same kind of point. A shorter answer can be wide if it moves between different ideas and structures with control. To widen range, add a new kind of move, not more of the same.

How can students widen range on purpose?

  • Read widely and copy out sentence patterns you admire.
  • Keep a short list of words you understand but rarely use, and try them in everyday writing.
  • In each piece, set yourself one stretch, such as a short sentence for emphasis.
  • Ask someone to read your work, because range is hard to judge from the inside.

Range is one part of the marking, alongside accuracy, structure and ideas. Mark descriptors differ by board; see the qualification pages. Our writing formats guides and skills pages show range task by task, and the glossary explains terms like “vary your syntax”.

How our teachers help

Range is hard to judge in your own writing, which is why a second reader makes such a difference. In our IGCSE English tuition, experienced English teachers read your child’s writing and point to where it is thin. They then practise one new move at a time until it holds under timed conditions.

Curious where your child’s range already stands? Book a paid one-hour trial lesson with the teacher who would continue with them, from RM70/hr, with the rate confirmed on WhatsApp.

Next, visit our skills guides to turn the idea into a habit. Our IGCSE English tuition page explains how lessons run. When you are ready, the paid one-hour trial is the first step.

Frequently asked questions

Does 'range' just mean using longer words?
No. Examiners reward the exact word, not the impressive one. Long words used loosely show a lack of control.
Can I have too much range?
Yes. Variety without control looks like showing off and usually costs accuracy. Aim for a comfortable range used cleanly, and widen it gradually.
How do I widen my range without sounding forced?
Build it in practice, not in the exam. Read widely, notice sentence patterns you like, and try them in low-stakes writing. A teacher can point to the few moves that would stretch you most.
