This guide explains why, and which questions turn that decision into a clear preparation plan.

Why does your child’s school usually decide which IGCSE English board they sit?

Because the school is the exam centre, and centres work with one board for consistency. The school trains its teachers, buys its materials and enters its whole year group through that board. Letting each family choose would break the timetable and the teaching.

This is normal and not a sign of a problem. Your role as a parent is to understand the school’s choice and prepare your child well for it.

What drives a school’s board decision?

Practical reasons. These include the school’s existing relationship with a board, its teachers’ training, the materials it has built up and its curriculum tradition. One board also keeps registration, exam supervision and results simpler.

None of this means the other boards are worse. The boards differ in shape rather than difficulty, as our qualification pages show.

What can a parent usefully do?

Ask the examinations office five questions:

  • Which board and syllabus code will my child sit?
  • Which strand (First Language English or English as a Second Language) are they entered for, and can it change?
  • Is Literature being taken as well?
  • Does any coursework or speaking component apply, and how is it arranged?
  • When does the course start, and which exam series is the target?

With these answers, you know exactly which exam your child will sit. That is far more useful than pushing for a board change the school cannot make for one student.

If this is where marks are going missing, a trial hour with an experienced teacher can work on it one-to-one.

Can a family ever choose its own board?

Yes, as a private candidate. A student not entered by a school registers at an authorised centre and can choose any board.

Some families also add a private entry for another board or strand alongside school. This adds cost, workload and timing issues, so it is only worthwhile for specific goals. Our comparison of private candidate vs school candidate explains the trade-offs.

Does the school’s board choice limit your child?

No. The major boards are widely recognised, and each is a fair version of a demanding subject. Results depend on good preparation for the board your child will actually sit.

Our comparison of Cambridge vs Edexcel First Language shows the differences are mainly in wording and structure, which good preparation handles.

What if you disagree with the school’s choice?

A school will rarely change its board for one family. In most cases, the sensible path is to prepare well for the school’s board.

If you have a specific reason, you could add a private entry for another board, accepting the extra cost and work. First check that your preference is based on a real difference in the papers, not on rumours about an “easier” board.

How our teachers work with your school’s board

Our teachers prepare your child for the exact board and strand the school has chosen, so lessons support the school rather than pull against it. In our IGCSE English tuition, an experienced teacher practises that board’s question types and wording with your child, using their own writing.

Once you have confirmed the board with the school, book a paid one-hour trial. The teacher will start with the paper your child will actually sit.

Next, visit our skills guides to turn the idea into a habit. Our IGCSE English tuition page explains how lessons run. When you are ready, the paid one-hour trial is the first step.

Frequently asked questions

Why can't I just pick the board I want for my child?
The school is the exam centre and builds its teaching around one board, so it enters all students through it. Only private candidates fully choose their own board.
What should I ask the school about the English entry?
Ask for the board, syllabus code and strand, whether the strand can change, and whether coursework or speaking applies. Confirm these with the examinations office.
Can I add a different board as a private candidate alongside school?
Some families do, but it adds cost, workload and timing issues. British Council Malaysia and the exam board have the official registration details.
