This guide explains the process simply.
How are IGCSE English grades actually decided?
Your answers are marked and the marks are added up. Then the exam board sets the grade boundaries for that exam series. A boundary is the lowest mark needed for each grade, and it can move so that grades reflect the same standard every year.
Knowing this points you to the part you can control: meeting the qualities the higher bands describe. Structures and current boundaries vary, so always use the board’s own materials via our qualification pages.
How do answers become marks?
Some short reading questions are marked more like right or wrong. But the longer analysis and writing tasks carry the most weight, and they have no single correct answer. These are marked by “levels of response”.
Each level, or band, describes what a stronger or weaker answer looks like. The marker reads your piece and decides which band it fits best. That is why English rewards clear analysis, developed points and controlled writing, as covered in our exam-strategy guides.
Why are levels of response used?
Two students can write very different strong pieces, and both deserve high marks. A right-or-wrong scheme could not handle that. Bands let markers reward quality in any style.
Boards keep marking consistent through training and checks, so the same piece would land in the same band whoever marked it. For students, this means making quality easy to see: clear points, explained evidence and a structure that holds.
If this is where marks are going missing, a trial hour with an experienced teacher can work on it one-to-one.
How do marks become grades?
After marking, the board looks at the marks across all students and sets the grade boundaries. If a paper was harder, a boundary may sit a little lower. If it was easier, it may sit a little higher.
So a mark that earned a grade on a past paper does not promise the same grade this year. Our guide to grades explains this in more detail.
What does this mean for your child?
No one can control where the boundary lands. The useful focus is on the quality of answers against the band descriptions. Developed analysis, well-chosen evidence and accurate writing lift a student’s band, wherever the boundary falls.
This is also why no honest teacher can promise a grade. Read a mock result as a picture of where the work sits now, not as a forecast. Look at what the marks reveal and work on the weakest area.
How our teachers help students reach the higher bands
In one-to-one IGCSE English tuition, our experienced teachers read a student’s work against the qualities the higher bands reward. They show, on the student’s own writing, the one change that would lift it most. You can practise the skills with our practice tasks and see your paper’s structure on the papers overview.
If you would like a clear picture of where your child’s writing sits now and what would move it up, book a paid one-hour trial class. Parents may also find our guide on judging progress before results useful.
